About Bhutan

Bhutan or as it is called the Kindom of Bhutan is a small landlocked state located in the easternHimalayas. Many people refer to Bhutan as the 'Last Shangri-La on Earth'. Bhutan shares its borders with the Republic of India to the South, East and West of the country and its borders to the north with the People's Republic of China. Bhutan has a population of about 690,000 people and the capital city of Bhutan is Thimpu. The Country is divided into 4 administrative zones which are further subdivided in 20 administrative districts known as Dzhongkhag. Dzhongkha is the official language of Bhutan.

The geography of Bhutan varies from the subtropical plains to the south to the Himalayan Heights to the north, with some mountains rising well over 7000 meters. The country can be broadly divided into 3 majorgeographical regions i.e. Western, Central and Eastern.

Bhutan's national religion is the Vajranya sect of Buddhism, with Hinduism being the second largest religion in the country.

Historically Bhutan was divided up into a series of warring feudal states which were united in the 17th Century by ShabdrungNawangNamgyal. The Butanese were constantly are war with the Tibetans throughout the 18th and 19th century. The present ruling dynasty was established in the year 1907 by the first king UgyenWangchuk. The present king His Majesty JigmeKhesarNamgyalWangchuk is the 5th ruler of the Dynasty. Until recently Bhutan was an absolute monarchy, the present King of Bhutan held election in 2008 and turned Bhutan into a constitutional monarchy.
