Trongsa is one the most sacred places in Bhutan, located in central Bhutan Trongsa is located two days away from the capital Thimphu. Trongsa once one the seat of power for the first and second kings of Bhutan and all the kings have served as the Penlop ( governor) of Trongsa before ascending the throne. Penlop of Trongsa is akin to the Prince of Wales in the modern world where the first in line to the throne serves at this post. The home to the annual TrongsaTshechu, the TrongsaDzhong was built in 1648 by the legendary warrior ShabdrungNawangNamgyal and dominates the valley below. The fortress has always been coveted as it is strategically located at the crossroads between eastern and western parts of the country. The TrongsaTshechu is a four day long annual festival usually held in the month of December. People from all walks of life and different regions of the country congregate at Trongsa to celebrate the festival and receive the blessings. The festival is known for its mask dances that are a common feature at almost all Bhutanese festivals. On the last day of the festival the sacred Nangtens are on display for people to receive the blessing from these holy relics.
