Jomohari Trek I&II

Jomohari Trek I&II

Summary: The JohohariTerk is one on the most popular treks in Bhutan, There are 2 different routes one can take. The Koholhari Trek I is the longer of the two 2 treks. The trek climbs almost 255 meter at the highest point reaching up to almost 5000 meters at one point, the route offers trekkers to witness a wide variety of landscapes, flora and fauna. The high point of the trek is the brilliant and captivating view of Mount Jomolhari from the mountains base camp at Jangothamg. The trek cuts across a part of the JigmeSingyeWangchuck National Park and offers trekkers with a chance to see many of Bhutan’s rare and excotic animals. The trek passes through many yak herders camps along the way and at one point the remote Lingshi region of Bhutan. Trekkers should be reasonably fit to endure the thin found at such high altitudes.

Day 1:

DrukgyelDzhong- SharnaZampa. Distance 17 Kilometers, Duration 4-5 hours, 360 meter ascent You will be dropped off at the road head at the DrukgyelDzhong from where you trek will begin. The trail will gradually climb along the Paroriver passing through meadows, rice paddies and beautifully decorated farmhouses. The trail continues to the Army Pst at the Gunitsawa Village, where you trekking permits will be examined and endorsed . The campsite is located a little further along the opposite bank of the river.

Day 2:

SharnaZampa- Thangthangkha. Distance 22 kilometer Duration: 7-8 Hours, 770 meter ascent The train continues along going over hills and valley along the Paro Chu. After a short uphill climb our trekking party will enter the JigmeDorji National Park. The valley narrows into a small path which descends into an alpine meadow where we will set up camp for the night. Weather permitting you can have spectacular view of Mount Jomohari at dawn.

Day 3:

Thangthangkha –Jangothang. Distance 19kilometers, Duration 5-6 hours, 480 meter ascent
After enjoying the early morning view of Mount Jomolhari we will continue our trek along the Paro River Valley which will gradually widen into swathes of Alpine meadows and pastures. On your way you will come across another army check point, you trek along you will get to enjoy spectacular views of majestic Himalayan mountain ranges. Today you will also come across herds of yaks and yak herder camps along the way. You will be crossing the remote villages of Soe, Takethang and Dangochang on your way to the campsite at Jangothang.

Day 4:

Jangothang- Halt
We will be halting in Jangothang for the day. There is a choice of day hikes that you may choose to undertake today, these day hikes take you to the surrounding lakes and offer great views of the nearby snowcapped mountains such as Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. You may also get to sport hers of blue sheep on the slope while trekking in Jangothang. The best hiking direction is to the west which will take u closer to Jomolhari and its subsidiary peaks

Day 5:

Jangothang – Lingishi. Distance 18 kilometers, Duration 6-7 hours, 840 meter ascent, 870 meter decent
Shortly after leaving our camp at Jangothang the trail will rapidly ascend upto the Nyili-La pass which is at an altitude of 4870 meters. You will have another chance to catch a glimpse of the Majestic Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshermingang, all of whom reach over 7000 meters in to the heavens. We will now begin our descent towards the Lingshi Valley, on our way down you will come across some Yak herders tents made out of Yak wool which is used by the herders to shelter themselves from the elementswhile moving from pasture to pasture. We descendinto the Lingishivallwy you will get another awesome view of the Tsemenrigange and its glaciers reaching up in to the sky. We will set up camp next to a stone hut located close the LingishiDzhong

Day 6:

Lingishi- Shodu Distance 22 kilometers, Duration 8-9 hours, 940 meter ascent and 920 meter decent
The trail now ascends to 4930 meters as we cross the Yeli-La Pass, where on a clear day you will have an excellent view of Mt Jomolhari, Tserimgang, and Masanggand. From there we have a steep decent to you campsite at the Shodu.

Day 7:

Shodu- Barshong Distance 16 kilometers, Duration 5-6 hours- 250 meter ascent, 670 meter decent
The trial will now follow the Thimphu Chu though the lush rhododendron forests of the Thimphu river valley. The valley will continue to narrow, till we ascend and reach the ruins of the BarshongDzhong.

Day 8:

Barshong – DolamKencho Distance 15 Kilometers, Duration 4-6 hour’s 290 meter ascent, 640 meter ascent.
As we continue down the Thimphu river valley, our trail will leads us through dense forests of Birch, Conifer Maple, Bamboo and Rhododendron trees. We will then reach our camp in DolamKencho which is located at an altitude of 3320 kilometers

Day 9:

DolamKencho – Dodena, Distance 8 Kilometers, Duration 3-4 hours, 500 meter ascent 930 meter decent.
Today we undertake the final leg of the trek, our path will continue through the mountains and over a small pass towards Dodena. We will soon exit the JigmeDorji National park and reach the road head where our vehicles will await us to take you back to the hotel for some much needed rest and relaxation

Jomolhari Trek 2

Day 5:

Jangothang to Dhumzo, Distance 16 Kilometers, Duration 6-7 Hours, 810 meter ascent , 1090 meter descent.
The trail will lead you through the last settlement in the valley and back to the banks of the Paro Chu. The trail will take u past the Tshophu Lake at an altitude of 4380 meters you will then rapidly ascend to the Bhonte –La pass which is at an altitude of 4890 meters above sea level. Bhonte-La is the highest point of this route. We will then trek downstream along the Dhumzo Chu and will set up camp close to the village of Dhomzo.

Day 6:

Dhomzo to ThombuShong, Distance 11 Kilometers, 720 meter ascent, 340 meter decent.
The trail will now climb over a 100 meter ridge and descend to another stream. We will then cross the Takhung-La pass at 4520 meter before descending to ThombuShong where we will set camp for the night

Day 7:

ThombhuShong to SharnaZampa, Distance, 13 Kilometers , 200 meter ascent, 1650 meter decent.
We will continue our trek up to the Thombu La pass from where we will descend down tot Gunitsawa and camp at the same campsite as the first night of the trek.

Day 8:

SharnaZampa to DrukgyelDzhong, Distance 17 Kilometers, duration 4-6 hours, 80 meter ascent, 360 meter descent. After crossing the river we will walk past the primary school and the shop to MitshiZampa from where the Dzhong will be visible and you cars will await you there to take you back to the comfortable confines of a modern day hotel room for some well-earned rest.
